Smyrna sits on the line between New Castle and Kent counties, on Duck Creek, about midway between Wilmington and Dover. It is a small town with an older downtown, surrounded by farmland and newer subdivisions, and it keeps its own town center, shops and restaurants.

Route 1 passes just east of town and US-13 runs through it, so both Wilmington and Dover are within an easy drive. Route 300 runs west toward Kenton and Maryland, and the Delaware beaches are reached by continuing south on Route 1. Dover Air Force Base is south of Smyrna, which suits people with a base commute, and the Middletown area is a short drive north.

The nearby outdoors are a big draw. Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge, a large coastal marsh on Delaware Bay known for birdwatching, is a short drive to the east, and Smyrna Landing on Duck Creek is a spot for paddling and fishing. There is a mix of locally owned restaurants and shops downtown, and larger grocery and retail stores are along US-13 and Route 1. Medical care is available in Smyrna, with larger hospitals in Dover and near Wilmington.
