Middletown is in southern New Castle County, about halfway between Wilmington and Dover. The town grew around a historic Main Street with its brick storefronts and older homes, and much of the surrounding area has since been built out with newer neighborhoods and shopping centers.

Route 1 is the main link north and south, with a toll road that reaches the I-95 area near Christiana and continues toward Dover. Route 301 connects to Maryland and the Chesapeake Bay region, Route 299 runs east and west through town, and US-13 runs parallel to the old alignment. Wilmington is a straightforward drive north, and Dover Air Force Base and Delaware’s capital are an easy drive south.

Everyday needs are handled locally, with grocery stores, restaurants, banks and services in and around town. Silver Lake Park, in the center of Middletown, has a walking path around the lake and open grass, and Wiggins Mill Park to the north has a pond and trails. Delaware City and the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal are a short drive northeast, and the Delaware beaches are reachable by Route 1 for day trips.

Much of the housing is newer: townhomes and single-family homes in planned communities such as Hyetts Crossing, built over the past couple of decades, alongside older homes on and near Main Street.
