Lewes is a historic town on Delaware Bay at the mouth of the Lewes and Rehoboth Canal, in Sussex County. The town’s main street and the blocks around it hold older houses, small shops and restaurants, and the area south and west of downtown has newer communities and shopping along Route 1.

Route 1 and Route 9 are the main roads. Route 1 runs south to Rehoboth Beach and the other Delaware beaches and north to Milford and Dover, and the Cape May–Lewes Ferry terminal connects to New Jersey across Delaware Bay. Georgetown, the county seat, is a short drive inland.

The biggest outdoor space is Cape Henlopen State Park, with its ocean and bay beaches, trails, dunes and fishing pier, next to town. The Lewes Historical Society’s collection of historic buildings and the Zwaanendael Museum are in the center, and the canal and bay beaches are popular spots for walking and boating. Beebe Healthcare’s main campus is in Lewes, making it one of the town’s largest employers, and larger shopping centers and outlets are along Route 1 between Lewes and Rehoboth Beach.
