Elkton is the county seat of Cecil County, Maryland, at the head of the Elk River. The town has a historic center with the county courthouse and older brick buildings, and it is surrounded by residential neighborhoods, shopping centers and a mix of farmland and newer subdivisions.

Location is a big part of why people look here. US-40 runs through town, Route 213 heads south toward Chesapeake City and north toward Fair Hill, and Route 279 runs northeast toward Newark, Delaware. I-95 is close by, which makes Wilmington, Philadelphia and Baltimore reachable by highway. The Delaware line is only a few miles east, so many residents work in Newark or Wilmington.

The area has a lot of open space. Fair Hill Natural Resources Management Area, with miles of trails through fields and woods, is a short drive north, Elk Neck State Park is south of town on the Chesapeake, and Elk Landing, where Big Elk Creek meets the Elk River, is a local waterfront spot. Shopping and dining are along Route 40 and Route 279, and Union Hospital of Cecil County is in town.
