Dover is Delaware’s capital and the largest city in Kent County. State government, Dover Air Force Base, Bayhealth Hospital’s Kent Campus and a range of retail and service businesses are the area’s main employers, and the historic Green in the center of town is where the state’s government has met for centuries.

Route 1 skirts the city on the east side and US-13, also known as DuPont Highway, runs straight through it. Route 8 (Loockerman Street) is the main east and west road through downtown. Wilmington and Philadelphia are a straightforward drive north on Route 1, and the Delaware beaches are about the same drive to the south and east. Dover Air Force Base, the home of one of the country’s largest air mobility bases, is just southeast of the city.

Daily life is well served. Dover Mall and the shops along US-13 cover most shopping, while First State Heritage Park, Silver Lake Park and the Dover Green are good places to walk. The Air Mobility Command Museum on the base is open to visitors, and Dover Motor Speedway hosts race weekends on the north side. Bayhealth Kent Campus is the area’s main hospital.

Housing includes older homes near the Green and downtown, townhomes and single-family communities on the north and west sides, and newer builds that continue to open.
