Chesapeake City, MD Homes & Real Estate

A canal-side town on the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal.

Chesapeake City is a small town in southern Cecil County, Maryland, on the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal. The canal splits the town into a north side and a south side, and the historic district on the south side, with its older brick and frame houses, small shops and restaurants, sits right along the water.

Route 213 is the main road through town and crosses the canal on a high-level bridge. Elkton and the Route 40 corridor are to the north, and Delaware is a short drive across the canal to the east, with Middletown reachable by way of Route 301. I-95 is a drive to the north through Elkton, which keeps Wilmington, Baltimore and Philadelphia within reach for commuters.

The canal is the heart of local life. A walking and biking path follows its banks, boaters tie up in the basin at Back Creek, and the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal Museum tells the story of the waterway. The Bohemia River and the Elk River are a short drive away for fishing and paddling, and Elk Neck State Park to the west has beaches and trails. Everyday shopping is a few minutes away in Elkton and North East, and Middletown, Delaware has larger stores.

Housing in town includes older homes in the historic district, smaller single-family homes on the north side and newer houses on the edges of town. Outside the town limits you will find farmland and homes on larger lots, some on well and septic. Homes near the canal and creeks can sit in a flood zone, and we check that for each address.

Because the town is small and the housing stock varies a lot from street to street, recent sales on the same block are the best guide to value. We pull those for you, confirm utilities, flood zone and taxes, and compare Chesapeake City with Elkton, North East and Middletown so you can see the trade-offs in commute and cost side by side.
